Discovering Bluetooth

For a long time now I have been looking for a cordless headset (headphones+mike) for my computer. All efforts (internet, shopkeepers) ended in stupid cordless headphones working on FM radio transmission but no wireless mikes. I had almost given up on finding wireless mikes when I discovered the magic of Bluetooth. I did look at Bluetooth headsets in the early going but wasn't sure about the range they would provide. I don't want a wireless headset that requires me to sit in front of the computer, I'm OK with my wired headset in that situation. Enter a Bluetooth USB Adaptor with a 100m range! Now this baby changes the whole game.
A Bluetooth USB adaptor is as small as your pen drives and can be had for as less as Rs 500/- (the recognizable brands, like Linksys, can cost up to Rs 2500/-). Combine that with a good Bluetooth Headset and you have a wireless phone ready to be used with Skype, Yahoo! Messenger, MSN Messenger or GTalk. A good headset will set you back by Rs 2000/- but there are some cheap ones available as well.
There are gizmos called Skype phones which can sync up your Skype phonelists and give you the flexibility of making Skype calls at the touch of a button. Not sure if they are available in India. I've seen Skype phones which can be plugged into a USB port but not a Bluetooth enabled phone. Another variant is as stereo headset. Just imagine how much better playing Counter Strike would be with a wireless headset. Plus from all accounts USB headphones are much better compared to the regular headphones as they don't suffer from contact jitters. Much better sound quality and it's wireless!!
A Bluetooth USB adaptor has other uses too. You can seamlessly sync up data in your mobile phone or PDA. You can connect a bluetooth enabled keyboard, mouse, printer, digital cameras and any device you can think of and avoid all the clutter of wires.
I hadn't given Bluetooth much thought for a desktop. I invariably associated Bluetooth or anything wireless with laptops but I have been proven wrong and I'm happy about it. Now I just need to go buy all this Bluetooth stuff and setup a wire-free computer. Now if only one could transmit power wirelessly, that could save a lot of power-cable clutter. Don't laugh, it's possible but it's a topic for another day.

Frist Post

OK, so I gave in to the temptation! I've resisted writing my own blog for a long time. In the end, I just decided to do it. I know I'm going to repent this soon but what better cure for the itch than to scratch it. I've got too many interests and don't need another one that distracts me from what I'm supposed to do.
Let's see, I need a name for the blog. Well, the naming rights are available, for a fee, of course. I also need to come up with some cool theme for the blog. Since writing about nothing is already taken, I'll just use this blog as a place for my head.

It's been over two days since I started writing my first blog entry. If I keep going at this pace, this blog isn't going to see many updates. Oh well, we'll see. I'll just post this to get something up there.
